Bunyan, John (1628-1688)

Place of Birth: Near Bedford, England

Occupation: Puritan writer and preacher

Early Christian Experience: Led to the Lord by his wife; learned English by reading the Bible; was baptized in Baptist Church

Experience of Persecution: Arrested when he began to preach without permission from the established church; in Bedford jail for twelve-and-a-half years; there wrote the allegory, The Pilgrim's Progress; freed by the Act of Pardon (1672) and given liberty to preach; served as pastor of Bedford Baptist Church for the rest of his life

Writings: The Pilgrim's Progress; Grace Abounding; The Holy War; Antichrist and Her Ruin (published posthumously, against the Church of Rome)
